There is nothing better than having a new carpet fitted. By making the correct decision with regard to colour and texture, you will completely re-vitalise the room in which the new carpet is fitted. Whether you opt for a plain beige carpet, or a heavily patterned axminster, we have something for you. It often helps to bring samples of upholstery, curtains and paint/ wallpaper with you when you make your choice, but we would always encourage you to take samples home with you prior to making your final decision, as different lighting can change the overall effect.

There are many different types and designs of carpet, and your final decision should be based around the life expectency of the carpet as well as it's colour and texture.

The first choice you will need to make will be whether you require a 100% manmade pile, or would prefer to have some wool content in the carpet. The advantages of 100% manmade pile (normally polypropylene, polyester or nylon) are cost and stain resistancy. A 100% Manmade carpet will be considerably cheaper than an equivalent with a wool content, and also, will be more resistant stains and spills. The downside of a manmade carpet is that the pile will tend to flatten after a while. This can lead to unsightly areas on the carpet (particularly on stairs and other heavy wear areas).

A carpet with an amount of wool in the pile will cost you more money, but will stay looking new for a lot longer than a man-made equivalent. This is because wool bounces back after it's been trodden down, and therefore retains an exceptional aesthetic value. Wool, however, is a softer product than nylon, polypropylene or polyester, and therefore, although it will feel nicer under foot, is not as hard wearing.

The optimum pile content, therefore, is a mix of wool and a man-made fibre. We supply a number of carpets with a pile content of 80% wool, and 20% manmade fibres . This mix is recognised to provide the optimum levels of comfort, durability, and appearance retention, and we would always recommend opting for an 80/20 carpet wherever possible, particularly in heavy wear areas.

The second choice you will need to make when choosing your carpet is the texture. There are four basic types of carpet texture -

By far the most popular texture of carpet is a twist pile. This is where each individual tuft is twisted round and round, therefore becoming stronger, and more resistant to wear. Because of this design, the carpet will have a slight 'bobbly' appearance on the surface, as the light will reflect off each pile in a slightly different direction. A twist pile carpet is always recommended for areas of heavy wear. Twist pile carpets are also less likely to suffer from pile reversal, although it is still possible under certain circumstances.

The second most popular style of carpet is a natural or berber texture. These carpets are basically loop piles, most often in natural colours, but in varying designs. Because a loop pile carpet is relatively flat, and to accentuate the 'natural' vibe, these carpets are often manufactured with a 100% wool pile. These carpets are fantastic aesthetically, but are generally not as hard wearing as a twist pile.

A velvet finish carpet is the third possibility. This style of carpet is manufactured in the same way as a twist, but the individual tufts are not twisted, but come straight up from the base. This gives a very clean, precise and smooth finish to the surface. This style of carpet is mostly only available as an 80/20 mixture, but because the pile is not twisted, will not be quite as hard wearing as a twist pile. Velvet carpets are also susceptible to 'pile reversal' which is a phenomenon that occurs where the pile direction of the carpet reverses in certain areas, and a water- mark effect occurs. This phenomenon is not accepted as a fault by any manufacturer, and therefore you must be aware of this when purchasing a velvet finish carpet.

The fourth style of carpet is a saxony. This is a deeper piled carpet, manufactured in a similar manner to a velvet, but where the pile is cut at a longer length than other carpets. This gives an exceptionally plush feel to the carpet, and indeed, feels like 'walking on air'. Because of the cost involved, most of these carpets are made using man-made fibres, and as a result, may be susceptible to flattening after a while. It is possible to purchase 100% wool saxony's, although the cost will be higher than other carpets due to the extra material required. Saxonies can be susceptible to pile reversal.

Once you have chosen your pile content, and texture of carpet, you can then select from our hundreds of different colours in each range. It is vital that the carpet you chose meets your needs, and we will talk you through all the options before you decide on a particular range.

We would always recommend that your carpet is professionally installed. This will ensure that it is tensioned correctly, and fitted accurately, thus enhancing it's appearance and wear potential. We offer a full installation service, and can even move your furniture and uplift and dispose of your existing flooring if you wish.

One aspect of your installation that is as important as the carpet itself is the underlay. We always recommend new underlay with a new carpet, as it is a bit like driving a new car on old tyres if you fit a new carpet on old underlay. We use Cloud 9 underlay, which is a foam product, and recognised to provide the optimum support for carpets. You can chose from 3 qualities - Nimbus (7mm thick), Cirrus (9mm thick), or Cumulus (11mm thick). Please ask to see samples of the three qualities when you select your carpet.

We would also recommend that all carpets with a wool content are Scotchguard protected prior to installation. Scotchguard means that your carpet will have an invisible layer across every tuft, which doesn't affect the feel or look of the product. It does, however, delay any spill or stain from seeping into the pile, giving you valuable time to remove the liquid before it causes any damage. Please request Scotchguard protection when you select your carpet.
